Live-in Caregivers Program

When there is a shortage of Canadian and permanent resident caregivers, this program allows families in Canada hire foreign workers to assist them in providing private care to children, seniors, or persons with disabilities.

Types of Caregivers Program

  1. Live-in caregivers program – living in your employer's home
  2. In-home caregivers – You now have the option of not living with your employer (new stream recently added to the caregivers program)

If you have at least one year of work experience in providing care for children, elderly, or people with disabilities, or have at least six months college training in this area, Caregivers Program might be right for you.

If you work under this program in Canada for 2 years, both you and your family may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Once you receive your permanent resident status in Canada, your family members will in turn receive immigrant visas in their home country. As part of the application process, your family members need to meet Canadian Immigration requirements, and undergo medical and criminal screening before being granted permanent residence in Canada.

Pathways to permanent residence

  1. Caregivers for children under 18 years of age (nannies, babysitters, or parents’ helpers)
  2. Caregivers for elderly persons, 65 years of age and older, or people with disabilities (nurse aids, patient services associates, home support workers, housekeepers)

Want to immigrate to Canada, and bring your family with you?

We can help you determine your eligibility for both Living-in Caregivers Program and In-home Caregivers Program, and ensure you and your family meets all the necessary requirements before applying for permanent residence.

Note for Canadian Employers

There are certain requirements that you have to meet before hiring a foreign worker under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. For example, you have to get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment or LMIA (former LMO), and make sure the contract complies with Live-in Caregivers requirements. As part of the recruitment and advertisement requirements, you will need to follow one of 2 streams in your application. Selecting an appropriate stream depends on whether you are hiring a caregiver for a low-wage or a high-wage position.
